Surgery for Engineers

I took a class last year called Surgery for Engineers. It is a class for biomedical engineers, and was unlike any other course I’ve taken before. The class only met once a week, on Wednesday nights, for 3 hours. During these lectures, we would usually hear from two different speakers, experts in various fields of surgery. The class also had a practicum component. We worked in small groups on a semester-long project, designing a device that would help surgeons in a particular area of surgery (my group did orthopedic surgery.) To help us with our projects, we got to observe different surgeries, from the operating room, to see what types of problems these surgeons might face and to build a mentor-like relationship with different surgeons. I am really interested in pursuing surgery as a carreer, so this was a really neat opportunity for me.
